Most people know Jackie Robinson for breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, but he was also a fantastic ballplayer who brought a lot of excitement to the game.
I mean, the guy regularly liked to steal home — how many baseball plays are more exciting than that?!
And that’s what I wanted to capture with this painting – Jackie Robinson sliding into home amid a cloud of dust, with a dejected catcher hanging his head with disappointment.
He’s pumping his fist as if to say, “Yes, I did it!”, which can obviously carry more meaning than simply stealing home.
