This was the fourth painting I completed in a new series of baseball portraits I am creating. Compared to my last series of baseball action paintings, this one is much looser in brushstrokes and more vibrant in color. My artistic inspirations for this series are Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney.
I chose David Ortiz as my fourth subject because the guy is one of the greatest ambassadors for the game of baseball and is almost universally loved… and he recently retired, so I wanted to honor him.
I chose green for the background to compliment the red in his jersey, give a little wink to another Boston franchise with green as their main color, and because green symbolizes peace and growth… two things I think reflect on David Ortiz’s career, in which he was a late bloomer and so easy to get along with.
