It was Honus Wagner’s famous card that inspired my current Pop Art-like series of baseball portraits… Unlike his card, which depicts him as a youth, I am portraying his later years because his grizzled face and expression are interesting to me. He reminds me of the tough, grizzled older guys I’ve had in my life who have been through some stuff and became tougher for it… a throwback to a different era when men had to grow up fast and life was a little bit tougher for your average American than it is now. I mean, the guy dropped out of school at age 12 to help his father and brothers in the coal mines and ended up having a Hall of Fame baseball career!

Derek Alvarez has been creating art since he was 3 years old. One of his drawings was exhibited on a nation-wide tour at age 12. He earned an art scholarship to the University of Arizona, focusing on oil painting, graduating in 2004, Magna cum Laude. He began selling his oil paintings while still in college, exhibiting his work in Scottsdale, Arizona and New York City. His work can be found in several public and private collections throughout the country. Currently, he is working as a full-time artist while traveling with his wife and two sons, and shipping his artwork throughout the world.
