The inspiration for this painting was Sleeping Ute Mountain in the Cortez, Colorado area where my wife and her family are from. This is her favorite mountain and I really like it, as well… when we were in Cortez many years ago I created a drawing or two of it.
One of the things I really enjoy about Ute Mountain is how different it looks depending on what angle or side of the mountain you are on. This view is from the McElmo Canyon side during the winter. Growing up in Southern California and Tucson, Arizona, I never grew to appreciate winter. I thought that by painting some winter scenes like this, I could learn to see the beauty in winter. One thing I do enjoy about it is the chance to “hibernate” or slow down and reflect on things. Winter also makes me really appreciate being inside a warm house, snuggled up with my family.
