I am creating a series of landscapes to show at a local restaurant here in Cortez, Colorado. My initial idea was to paint the different mountains around here showing the different seasons. I still might do that, but right now I have a bunch of painting ideas for the Sleeping Ute Mountain. This is my wife, Monique’s, favorite mountain and I really like it, as well. When we were in Cortez a couple years ago I created a drawing or two of it.
One of the things I really enjoy about Ute Mountain is how different it looks depending on what angle or side of the mountain you are on. This view is from the McElmo Canyon side during the winter. Growing up in Southern California and Tucson, Arizona, I never grew to appreciate winter. Maybe by painting some winter scenes like this, I can learn to see the beauty in winter. One thing I do enjoy about it is the chance to “hibernate” or slow down and reflect on things. Winter also makes me really appreciate being inside a warm house, snuggled up with my Sweetie and little dog, Charlie.
