This painting is inspired by a trip we took to Kravica Falls in Bosnia and Herzegovina… I was definitely inspired by the falls, so I wanted to capture the entire effect of the water flowing down the river and the surrounding hills and vegetation, but on an intimate scale.
This scene is actually from above the falls… viewed from below, they look much larger. My family and I hired a boat to get a closer view, as well… maybe I’ll paint that view in the future. I used a Renaissance compositional technique to frame the scene with two trees. One of my favorite things is probably the interplay of shadow and light, with some of the brightest greens I’ve ever used.
